On December 19, 2023, the Expert Group for eco-responsible sports, mandated by the European Commission, submitted its report on the contribution of sports to the European Green Deal. Prepared within the framework of the EU's work plan for sports 2021-2024, this report offers specific guidance and recommendations to enable European sports to achieve the goals of the Green Deal.
In its work, the expert group focused on four areas of action:
1. Innovative intersectoral cooperation
2. Sustainable sports infrastructures
3. Sustainable sports events
4. Capacity building in education and promotion of sustainable sports practices
Regarding the recommendations made by the group, European institutions, member states, and sports organizations are encouraged to:
1. Enhance their governance
2. Develop sustainable development strategies and action plans for sports
3. Fund projects that promote sustainable sports
4. Strengthen organizations' capacities through sharing best practices, training, and network development
5. Promote environmental opportunities and encourage initiatives in this field.
