PROTECTING WOMEN'S RIGHTS THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM

In Venezuela, the long-standing commitment of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to volunteerism for sustainable development facilitated the integration of highly qualified professionals in their teams as UN Volunteers. On World Population Day, discover some of the main results achieved with the contribution of these UN Volunteer Experts.

 

HOUSE-TO-HOUSE STRATEGY

Five UN Volunteer Experts mobilized 800 civil society volunteers to deliver dignity kits and raise awareness on gender-based violence to 26,000 women in Venezuela.

With the support of women leaders from the communities who joined as volunteers, they were able to also educate 13,000 adolescents on sexual and reproductive health.

In total, 40,000 conversations where held, advancing women’s rights. 

 

ACHIEVING THE “THREE ZEROS”

Daniel Valbuena is a surgeon and UN Volunteer Expert who serves in the sexual and reproductive health component of UNFPA Venezuela. He contributes to achieving the Three Zeros: zero unmet contraceptive needs, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender based violence.

“We are present in three municipalities of Zulia. We train health personnel in 11 centres. We dispense contraceptive methods, carry out workshops in communities where women have difficulty getting around, and inform about the correct use of condoms, and how to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In addition, we empower the female population on issues of sexual and reproductive health and awareness of gender-based violence.”

 

 

A FOCUS ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
