The Cities of Service is an innovative network of cities, small and big, promoting, together the power of volunteerism in the USA. The alliance shows also how philanthropic work can go together with the work of public administration. I would call this the best example of good governance. Right now 202 cities are part of it. When philanthropic money can work magic, Nashville shows the example.

The article is based on my observation and discussion with some women of Badi community during my seven days official visit to Kailali and its adjacent district. It highlights the government apathy towards their concerns and compelling them to engage in such activities. It also suggest some measures that intends to improve their situation and help them to live a dignified and respectful life.

Volunteering is about passion, commitment and determination to do something for a good cause. There are many definitions but ultimately it is up to you to take a stand and do something. Nepal has a great social fabric with millions of people engaged at local level to make their communities a better place to live. Still a national policy could greatly promote and recognize volunteering in Nepal.
