I condemn the killing of journalist Edmondo Bahati Monja and call for a prompt and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated as it only emboldens those who seek to silence journalists.
Edmondo Bahati Monja was the Coordinator of the Catholic radio station Radio Maria. He was reportedly shot dead at point-blank by armed men in Goma on the evening of 27 September as he was leaving the radio station to return home.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
