Event Description: During this talk, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Luís Roberto Barroso will explore the foundations of basic democracy, the features of contemporary populism, and how populism can negatively impact crucial democratic bodies such as the courts. He will discuss examples of court systems that could not resist the rise of populism, leading to their capture, as well as times when the courts were successful in withstanding populism – one of the most notable instances being that of Brazil.
